The Complete Guide toManicure & Pedicure

Beyond aesthetics – understanding proper care

Manicure: More than just colour

Manicure is often reduced to "painted nails". Actually, it's care. Your hands go through a lot. What's the point?

  • Shape: Round or square, mainly cleanly filed.
  • Cuticles: Gently pushed back and cared for, instead of aggressively cut.
  • Health: Avoiding cracks and hangnails.

You can do this at home, but in the studio, the angle is better, the light is better, and the tools are sharper. The result usually lasts longer.

Pedicure: Basic maintenance for feet

Feet carry us all day. Often in tight shoes. That leaves traces.

What I do:

  • Callus: Smoothing it so nothing pinches.
  • Nails: Shortening and cleaning corners (important against ingrowns).
  • Care: Moisture for dry skin.

It's not just about looks, but about walking well again. And in summer it looks better too, of course.

Gel Polish: 3 weeks of peace

A mix of polish and gel. Hardens in the lamp.

Pros:

  • Instantly dry: No smudges putting on shoes.
  • Durability: Lasts much longer than normal polish.
  • Shine: Stays stable.

Con: For removal you have to come back or do it very carefully. Don't rip it off!

Polygel: For problem nails

If your nails are very thin or keep breaking, Polygel helps. It's lighter than acrylic, but more stable than just Gel Polish.

Good for:

  • Reinforcing nails.
  • Adding a bit of length.
  • Repairing broken corners.

French: The safe classic

Pink bed, white tip. Matches sweatpants and evening gown. Can't go wrong with it.

Variants:

  • Classic: Hard white edge.
  • Babyboomer: Soft fade (Ombré).
  • Colour: Coloured tip instead of white.

Hygiene: My serious bits

I work with sharp tools on skin. Cleanliness isn't an option, it's a duty.

What I look for:

  • Single-use: What can't be sterilised gets tossed.
  • Autoclave: Metal is sterilised at 134°C.
  • Disinfection: Surfaces and hands.

Feel free to watch. Trust is good, checking is better.

How often?

Depends how fast your nails grow.

  • Manicure: Every 2-3 weeks.
  • Pedicure: Every 4-6 weeks (toenails are slower).

Don't wait too long, otherwise the stress point shifts (leverage effect) and the nail can break.

Home work vs. Salon

You don't need to come for every filing.

At home: Oil, cream, file now and then.

Here: Deep clean, trimming cuticles, gel layers.

Together it works best.

Pregnancy

No problem. Products are safe. If the belly gets in the way or sitting is hard, say so. We'll find a comfortable position together.

Nails and Health

Nails need nutrients. If they splinter, it's often lack of moisture or vitamins. Drinking lots of water helps.

I check for discolouration or ridges. If it looks medical, I send you to the doctor. I'm a beautician, not a doctor.
